Book of the Week: Monster Friends, Monster Friends, What Do You Eat?

We are thrilled to share this week's book of the week, Monster Friends, Monster Friends, What Do You Eat?  After several weeks of working on this product, it's finally ready!  Inspired by Eric Carle's fantastic Brown Bear, Brown Bear What Do You See, we created our own monster-themed book just in time for Halloween (or any time during the year).  Included in the book are the rhyme and rhythm as well as a focus on basic "wh" question who, what, when, where, and why.  These adorable monsters welcome students to join them in their adventure through either a 26-page interactive book or a traditional read or both!  Included in this activity pack are the following activities which are aligned to the common core:

  • MONSTER BOOK can be printed as either a traditional read or interactive read (RF.K.1, RF.K.2, RF.K.3, RF.1.1, RF.1.2, RF.1.3).
  • COMPREHENSION includes 12 comprehension cards and a cut-and-paste activity (SL.K.2., SL.1.2,).
  • ANTONYMS contain 40 anontym cards (20 word pairs) that can be used for drill, memory-matching, or Go Fish (i.e. "Do you have a card that means the opposite of … ?") (L.K.4, L.1.4).
  • COMPARE/CONTRAST includes 30 stimulus cards for students to state two (or more) ways the monsters, objects, animals, etc. are the same or different (L.K.5, L.1.5).
  • CATEGORIZATION contains 24 monster cards, five category boards with cues and five without cues. Students sort monsters given category prompts (L.K.5, L.1.5).
  • FOLLOWING DIRECTIONS includes a game board as well as 36 one-step direction cards, 36 two-step direction cards, and 36 three-step direction cards. Students race to find a monster card that matches each monster house (SL.K.2, SL.1.2).
  • GRAPHING AND CONCEPTS includes activities that focus on counting, tallying, graphing, and answering basic quantitative and qualitative questions (K.CC.B.4, K.CC.B.5, K.CC.C.6, I.MD.C.4).
  • WRITING prompts students to draw their own monster, write an introductory sentence and three sentences that describe their monster (W.K.2, 1.1.2).
  • BINGO (INFERENCING) includes five bingo cards and 24 inferencing cards in which students match the monster description to its picture (SL.K.2, SL.K.3, SL.1.2, SL.1.3).
