Our Favorite Halloween Apps

Halloween is less than two weeks away and our students are over the past few weeks were talking about their costumes and their outings to local pumpkin patches. It provides a wonderful opportunity to discuss events in their life and some seasonal vocabulary. As it is getting close we thought that we would share our favorite Halloween Apps for the 2014 Halloween holiday.

First Words Halloween- is a simple spelling app that is great for introducing phonics vocabulary and spelling. They pair fun images with the word and students drag the letters onto the correct square. It is great for tactile learners. You can get it on Android market or iTunes. It is priced at $1.99

Its the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown- This app is a book but it is so much more. It also has music and changing scenery to make the book more engaging to students. After the story they also have some nice built in extension activities where students get to design their own Jack-o-lantern and costume. You can get it on Android market or iTunes. It is priced at $5.99. Great for language, seasonal vocabulary and to compare/contrast with the TV special with the same title. 

                     

Angry Birds Seasons Ham-o-ween- This app has all the classic qualities about Angry birds that people love, but with a Halloween Twist. Great for a reinforcer this October. It can be purchased within the Angry Birds Season Pack at the iTunes or Android market. 

Happy Halloween Pumpkin Maker- This app is perfect way to carve a pumpkin with out the mess. Students love this app and its free from both the iTunes and Android Market. We also have used this app in the past to describe what their pumpkin looks to build expressive language skills. 

Trick-or-Tracker- This App is for parents to track their older student's whereabouts when trick-or-treating or going out with friends on Halloween night. It is available at the iTunes store.

Halloween Sounds Pro- This App has 14 different sounds that you can play singly or simultaneously to create a spooky atmosphere. This is an app I have not yet used but plan to at a halloween party later this fall. It is free and you will have to screen it to make sure the sounds are ready for smaller children if you are worried they will become scared. Available at the iTunes store.

Mickey's Spooky Night- Puzzle Book- This App can be used with preschoolers up to early elementary. During a spooky night Mickey sees many halloween themed items. There are puzzles that a child needs to match or put together to get further in the story. The book can be read to the student or for kindergarten-2nd grade the students can help read. It has a lot of descriptive vocabulary for young kids like scary, silly or suddenly. It is great for my articulation students working on /s/ blends.  It is available in for Android and apple products and is .99 cents.
