Book of the Week: The Snowy Day

The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats

Summary:
This book takes place as the first snow fall of the season occurs.  Peter wakes up to find outside covered in snow.  He puts on his red snowsuit and heads outside for a series of snowy adventures.  This book is simple and true to almost any child's snow experience.  Students are sure to relate to his snowy fun!

Vocabulary:
  • smack - to hit
  • heaping - a lot of something in a pile
  • pretend - to make believe
  • firm - hard
  • adventures - fun and exciting experiences
  • melt - to change into a liquid

Questions:
What did the author mean when he said that "snow covered everything?"
Why did Peter have to wear a snowsuit?
Peter's feet left footprints in the snow.  What other animals could leave footprints in the snow?
Do you think the snow hurt Peter's head when it fell from the tree?  Why or why not?
What might have happened if Peter joined the older boys' snow ball fight?
What could Peter have used to slide down the hill?
Why were Peter's socks wet when came inside and took off his boots?
What happened to Peter's snowball?
Do you think Peter likes the snow?  Why or why not?
