limerick:
an Irish poem
shamrock:
a three-leaf clover
Ireland:
the country in Europe where St. Patrick is their Patron Saint.
Irish:
a word to call anyone from Ireland
Gaelic:
the official language spoken in Ireland
snake:
a reptile banished from Ireland by St. Patrick
leprechaun:
a small legendary creature that hides his gold at the end of a rainbow
green:
the color of shamrocks
March:
the month of St. Patrick's Day
lucky: a word to describe having good luck
rainbow:
a place where a Leprechaun hides his gold
four-Leaf
clover: a good luck charm if found
Because the color green is associated with St.
Patrick’s Day, we love targeting these “green” idioms:
To give someone the green light:
to be given permission to
go start something
such as a project
Example:
“My teacher gave met the green light to start my homework.”
To
be green with envy: to be jealous or envious of someone
Example:
“When I saw her new shoes I was green with envy.”
To have a green thumb: to a have a talent for
making things grow
Example:
“Wow! You must have a green thumb. Your
garden is gorgeous.”
To
be green around the gills: to look sick enough to throw up
Example:
“She looked green around the gills after the day at the amusement park.”
The
grass always greener on the other side: a place that is
different seems better than where we are now
Example: “I wish I had your teacher, it looks like you
have so
much fun."
