Book of the Week: Pete the Cat and His Magic Sunglasses

Pete the Cat and His Magic Sunglasses by Kimberly and James Dean

Summary:
We just can't get enough of Pete the Cat!  Maybe we're catching his chill-attitude?  (How can we not with summer vacation?)  In this book, Pete wakes up in a not-so-great mood.  With the help of Grumpy Toad and his magic sunglasses, Pete shares the happiness the sunglasses give, or so he thinks!  Pete learns that happiness comes from within himself, not from a pair of sunglasses.

Questions:
What do you think happened that made Pete feel grumpy at the beginning of the story?
Was Pete excited to see Grumpy Toad?  Why or why not?
What did Grumpy Toad give to Pete?
What did Grumpy Toad mean when he said that the new sunglasses would help Pete "see things in a whole new way?"
How did Squirrel feel?  Why did he feel that way?
How did Turtle feel?  Why did he feel that way?
How did Crocodile feel?  Why did he feel that way?
What did Pete do to help his friends Squirrel, Turtle, and Crocodile?
What happened to the cool, blue, magic sunglasses?
What did Owl tell Pete?  Did it help?    How do you know?

This book lends itself well for working on feelings and emotions.  Harper Collins offers a free video on their website to support the reading of the book that you can find here.  There are other great ideas floating around, too.  Mrs. Larremore at Chalk Talk offers great ideas to use with this book on her blog.  Kinderplans also has some great ideas for early learners.
